The Santa Rosa School District will be featured in "Champions of Industry: Spotlight on Education" on the Discovery Channel.
"Champions of Industry" is an 8-year-old series that highlights excellence in business practices. This is the first time the program has focused on education.
Santa Rosa was selected from six school districts in Florida.
"We chose it for its high academic achievement in the state, the accountability system of addressing staff stability and because it is a down-to-earth school system that really is delivering on its mission," said Casey Woodard, associate producer of the program.
Superintendent John W. Rogers hopes to have the five geographical areas of the county featured.
"I'd like to see each community represented through classrooms and partners in education and other ways," he said.
"We are just real excited about this opportunity for the School District and the whole community of Santa Rosa County to receive recognition for the wonderful work they do in making their district a model district."
Oriole Beach Elementary School teacher Cathy Purdon would like to see focus on the district's literacy efforts.
"I'd also like to see the teamwork displayed between the County Commission, the School Board, teachers and parents, and the way we all work toward the goal of what is best for the students," Purdon said. She was selected Santa Rosa County's teacher of the year and also is the regional representative in the competition for Florida teacher of the year. The winner will be announced July 22.
Woodard said they will spend an eigh! t-! hour day filming in Santa Rosa County in mid- to late Sep! tember.
"Champions of Industry: Spotlight on Education" is produced by Pat Summerall Productions. Summerall, a legendary sports broadcaster, also narrates the program.
